Johnnie Hopkins and The Bullets Save the Best for Last

Tuesday night was filled with several close games that could have been considered game of the night, but it was a Johnnie Hopkins three-point buzzer beater that put the finale game above the rest.

The game of the night began with two teams tied. After forty minutes of intense and exciting basketball the game of the night finished with two teams tied once again. Thanks to a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer by Dack Ishii, Johnnie Hopkins was able to avoid a heartbreaking loss to The Bullets. The match was close from start and the final score couldn't have been any closer. Corey Hales had a phenomenal first half for Hopkins by scoring 15 points and playing tremendous defense. Jordan Preston did the same for The Bullets by scoring eight straight points at the end of the first half to bring The Bullets within one going into the break.

The second half was just as close as the first as the score continuously bounced back and forth. With 1:30 left in the game Hopkins found themselves ahead 70-68, but a crucial jumper by Nick Mitchell of The Bullets tied the game. At this point, the two other late games were finishing up and the crowds from both courts began to migrate over to court two to watch the end of the thrilling match.

Ramen Abraham answered Mitchell's shot with a three-pointer on the other end to put Hopkins up by three, but a foul and two made free throws later brought the score within one again. Then Carlos Craig started playing by himself for The Bullets. With 30 seconds left, Craig stole the ball on an inbounds pass, drew a foul, and went to the line to try and retake the lead. He hit both clutch free throws and put The Bullets up by one point with 25 seconds to go. A crucial defensive stop and another drawn foul later, Craig was back on the line to try and make it a two possession lead. He made the first free throw but couldn't nail the second one.

With ten seconds on the clock, The Bullets were up by three and Johnnie Hopkins had one last shot to make a three-pointer and finish the game at a tie. They moved the ball around trying to find an open shot and with two seconds left, the ball found the hands of Ishii. Way beyond the arc with a highly unlikely shot, Ishii threw the ball up in desperation. To his fortune and to The Bullets utter shock, the ball swished through the net and the buzzer sounded. The amazing battle had finished with a draw, capping off a spectacular night of open league play.

Mitchell finished with 26 points for The Bullets and Preston added 17. Hales led the charge for Hopkins with 26 points, Abraham netted 17, and Adrian Diaz put up 16 on the board.

Boyd Law 66 - DGAF 41

Dan Martinez had a huge night as Boyd Law cruised to a 66-41 win over a struggling DGAF squad on Tuesday night. Boyd came out ready and their solid play was too much for DGAF to compete with. Martinez scored almost half of Boyd's points for night and was practically unstoppable from beyond the arc. He finished the game with 31 points and six three-pointers.

DGAF gave a good effort and fought until the mercy rule kicked in at the two minute marker. Sammy Scherr had a strong outing with 14 points for DGAF, however, the team couldn't get much going for them as they were outmatched by the talent of Boyd Law.

Boyd controlled the game from the beginning and didn't stop in their well-earned victory. Christopher Cannell finished with 15 points for Boyd.

Fantastic Five 65 - The Bangers 54

The early game of the eventful night featured two outstanding co-ed teams facing off with each other. The Bangers didn't make haste from tipoff as they jumped out to an early lead. Bryson Redd couldn't have had a better start to his game as he scored ten points within the first three minutes of the game. The Fantastic Five didn't let it out of hand though and with scoring from Nick Johnson and Cody Hill, they were right back in the game.

Once they took the lead, the Five didn't let it out of their sight. They finished strong in the first half thanks to 18 points by Johnson and 13 from Hill. Johnson wasn't missing from three-point range in the first half and finished with four. Hill didn't use his long range shooting as much but rather resorted to his speed and excellent ball handling to burst past the Bangers defense for easy lay-ups.

The Bangers were never out of the game but could never seem to get within real striking distance to pose a threat on the Five. Johnson closed out the night with 25 points to his name and Hill was close behind with 23. Although Redd started out on fire, the Five was able to hold him to just four points the rest of the contest. DeAnna Mayfield hit two four-pointers and finished with 11 total for the Bangers.

Team Ford 99 - Kruger's Cut List 85

It's difficult to imagine that a team can score 85 points in an intramural game and LOSE. Unfortunately Kruger's Cut List was faced with this harsh reality in a high scoring match that resembled more of an NBA game rather than a college intramural game. Team Ford was one point shy of being the only team in 5-on-5 to reach triple digits in a game as they edged Kruger's 99-85.

Thanks to lots of fast breaks and three-pointers Team Ford ran up the scoreboard at a rapid pace. One would think that a score of 99 would end up being a total blowout, however, Kruger's Cut List always found answers to the constant scoring and managed to keep Team Ford on their toes. Ford was led by Cory Ford and Ryan Burneo who both broke 30 points, scoring 36 and 33 respectively. James Brown also ran up a high personal score with 22 on the night.

Lon Kruger would have even admired the tough play from his cut list team who never gave up, but on the other hand couldn't stop the high powered offense that is Team Ford. Ford had a lot of help through offensive rebounds to get several second chances at scoring, which they were able to capitalize on. Trevor Cornia was the key player of the night for Kruger's with 28 points.

Robomonster 58 - Nupes or Nothing 37

Nupes or Nothing may have stood taller and ran faster but Robomonster used solid team play, crisp passes, and excellent high-percentage shooting to cruise to a 58-37 victory over the runner-ups from last year. Good play was the key factor in this game as Robomonster did a great job at converting on offense and holding Nupes on defense. They took a 31-20 lead into the break and it just got worse from there for Nupes.

Nupes struggled to get anything going for them and never brought the score within less of 13 in the second half. Robomonster was simply the better team on all levels in this match up as they finished off their opponent via mercy rule at the two minute marker.

Bryan Burrell and Kyle Parsick were the top performers for Robomonster with 18 points apiece. Parsick used his great shooting skills and tough defense to lead the team. Robert Lawrence led the way for Nupes with 19 points and Bryson Redd chipped in 14.

Kappa Sigma B 46 - Phi Delta Theta 44

The only Greek match up of the night did not disappoint as Kappa Sigma edged Phi Delta Theta in a close battle that came down to the wire. The game started off sloppy with several ugly shots on both ends and a low scoring contest early in the first half. Phi Delt was the first to find their comfort zone and they used that to their advantage to go into the half with a 24-18 lead.

Ksig found their game as the second half began and started off with quick points to tie the game. The rest of the match was a constant see-saw of back and forth scoring and lead changes. With less than a minute left in the game, Phi Delt was ahead by one point and looking to be the team to come out on top. However, a few costly errors gave Ksig extra chances to win the game. The biggest fault came when an inbound pass was overthrown and rolled out of bounds. Ksig capitalized on the error and put themselves ahead by one.

Phi Delt's next possession resulted in a foul and Ryan Senser standing at the free throw line to try and retake the lead and put the pressure back on Ksig. He sunk the first shot but couldn't land the second shot and Ksig regained possession with 19 seconds left. As the clock wound down they tried to find an open shot to win the game. Fortunately, the ball found the hands of Alex Klorman who turned and sunk a lay-up with four seconds left. Phi Delt has one last chance for a desperation shot to win the game, however, Jordan Deane's shot was off and the final buzzer sounded to ice the victory for Ksig.

LDSSA Ballers 67 - Matzah Ballers 36

A 24-0 run in the first half for LDSSA basically shut the door on any chance for the Matzah Ballers to make the game interesting in a 67-36 route. LDSSA was too strong on offense for the Matzah Ballers to compete with as their size and strength was an advantage for more offensive rebounds and second chances.

Jeff Bowler came up big with 20 first half points and his shooting percentage was off the charts. Thomas Harvey showed off his impressive point guard skills as he would often setup shooters Bowler and big man Cameron Hyer for easy shots. Sammy Scherr had a great outing despite a rough night for Matzah who seemed too confused on defense to really make any stops on LDSSA quick passes and moving players.

Bowler added eight second half points to finish with 28 on the night. Harvey put up 14 points and Hyer added 10. Scherr netted 22 points and Itamar Labouz finished with 9 points to his name.

Alpha Team 66 - Team 3D 47

Jason Vanmeetren was virtually unstoppable in the first half as Team Alpha jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Vanmeetren scored 17 points in the first half en route to a 35-21 halftime advantage for Alpha.

Team 3D played well in the first half keeping the score within reaching distance. The second half was not as easy for them as Alpha came out of the break on a surge and started pulling away with a huge lead. 3D gave an admirable effort being down by so much but their efforts weren't enough to overcome such a deficit. Alpha was a field goal away from pulling the mercy rule card on Team 3D but couldn't score in the last two minutes.

Vanmeetren finished with 24 points and Tyson cross added 17. Jeffrey Higbee led the way for Team 3D with 15 points and Nathan Swenson chimed in with 10 of his own.

Deadliest Catch 61 - Open and Notorious 27

Deadliest Catch used their speed advantage and superb defense to run away with a 61-27 pounding of Open and Notorious. They hustled well and turned several Open turnovers into points to extend their early lead further and further.

Nick Salvadore topped the scoring leader board for Deadliest Catch with 15 points and Justin Fuller followed close behind with 14 of his own. The game was called at the five minute mark due to the mercy rule.

Open and Notorious struggled to get things going for them. They had no offensive rhythm working their way and they caused way too many turnovers. They never gave up but never seemed to find an answer for Deadliest Catch. John Ward had a good day as he led Open and Notorious with 17 points.

My Bois 53 - Athletics 52

Another game of the night finalist. Two undefeated teams squaring off in a game that was predicted to be a close one. That prediction turned out to be true as My Bois barely defeated the Athletics. Both teams came out with plenty of intensity and the heat never cooled down. From tipoff to the final buzzer both squads went all out to win which led to several back and forth lead changes. The score was close going into the break and the second half wasn't any different. If anything the intensity grew in the second half.

Michael Johnson had a brilliant second half with 10 points and solid all-around play. Sandro Maric did the same for the Athletics with 11 points and tough defense. The score continued to bounce back and forth into the last minute. With 20 seconds left and down by one, the Athletics had to continue to foul the My Bois players until they could get them into the bonus. With ten seconds left, My Bois went to the line to shoot but missed the shot. The Athletics had one last chance to win the game, but the shot was off and My Bois held the ball until the buzzer sounded.

Quinton Porter finished with 10 points for My Bois. Mark Hill put up 10 points for the Athletics.

Just Do It 55 - AK Holics 53

AK Holics may have entered the game heavily favored, but it was Just Do It who came out with the upset victory 55-53. Just Do It came out strong using their speed in transition and surprisingly good play by their big men up against AK Holics big men to take an early advantage in the first half. AK Holics struggled early as their shots weren't falling but they picked up the momentum late in the half and surged back to enter the break down by two points.

The second half started off similar to the first. Just Do It was able to make their shots while AK Holics once again struggled to put away their shots. For a team that is well known for making a lot of three-pointers, they didn't make one three in the second half. Trailing 50-39 late in the game, however, AK Holics once again found their stride and rallied to cut the deficit down to three points with one minute to go. Forty seconds later the game was all knotted up at 53 and it looked as if AK Holics were going to destroy Just Do It's hopes for an upset.

With time winding down to the final seconds, Just Do It had the ball trying to win the game. With 3.5 seconds left Matt Uehara was fouled and sent to the line to shoot two. In the clutch situation, Uehara sunk both shots to put Just Do It ahead. AK Holics had one last shot but Jake Miles missed the buzzer beater and the upset was complete.

Jason Graflund finished with ten points in each half and Kyle Wilson put up 10 points. Nathan Sharp scored 12 point for AK Holics and Nick Johnson added 10.

The Fury 75 - Ante Up 35

The Fury have definitely bounced back from the huge loss in their first game against Amilli. Last Thursday they had a big win against The Bullets and on Tuesday night they trounced Ante Up in a game that ended with a forty point mercy rule. Ante Up had a rough first week and this loss didn't make anything better. The Fury was just way too fast for them and started the game with an early lead that was built off of quick steals and easy lay-ups.

Ante Up put up a good fight in the first half on offense with 21 points, but their defense struggled by giving up 48. The Fury helped themselves out on defense as well with several good blocks and numerous forced turnovers.  Being up by so much after the first half, they took it a little easier in the second half and cruised to a forty point lead which was called at the ten minute mark.

D'angelo Saulsberry  had a big day with 19 first half points and 30 total. Neal Ekpoudia finished with 14 buckets and Demarcus Bourne ended his night with 13. Kenna Uzowihe led Ante up with 8 points and Alex Muldrow was close behind him with 7.

Amilli 70 - The Rain 30

After two large margin victories last week, Amilli was easily the heavy favorite coming into the match up with The Rain. After Jason Pettaway started the game off with a dunk it looked as though Amilli was going to run away with another big win. After the first ten minutes, Amilli was not looking as tough as they normally do. Amilli was not playing up to their potential early in the game and it looked as if The Rain was going to make it an interesting match up.

The first half ended with Amilli ahead 35-21. It could have been closer but a late rally by Amilli extended their lead into the break. During the break something must have happened to the Amilli players, because when they returned for the second half they had returned to the same unstoppable force they were playing at last week. They started the second half on a tear with a string of steals and counter lay-ups. Within the first three minutes Amilli had all but sealed a blow out victory.

The ten minute mark hit and the buzzer signaled an early night for the two squads. Damian Hill led the scoring effort for Amilli with 17 buckets and Kimani Bullard added 14. Rashard Burton led The Rain with 8 points while Ehbert Talice lit up the scoreboard with 7 of his own.
