Taylor Ross Helps Fantastic Five Triumph Against DGAF
Fantastic Five needs a last second play by Ross to hold onto the win against winless DGAF.
**GAME OF THE NIGHT** Fantastic Five 73 - DGAF 70
Taylor Ross of Fantastic Five's lay-up "and-one" with 6.1 seconds left pushed Fantastic Five past a DGAF team that pulled some late game heroics by a final score of 73-70.
With DGAF trailing by ten points with two minutes left, the lead was cut to only four points following shots made by Danny Mason and Briauna Bissen. But the heroics came with 16 seconds left, when Bissen hit a four-point shot with a hand in her face to tie the game.
After a near turnover, Cody Hill was able to maintain his dribble and find Ross down low for the easy lay-up despite a hard foul. After making the free throw, DGAF had one last chance to tie or win it, but Sammy Scherr's buzzer beating three-point attempt sailed too high.
Ross took over the game in the second half, scoring 18 points en route to 20 total. Teammate Nick Johnson also dominated in the second half from beyond the arc, scoring 12 points on his way to 21, all of which came off of three point attempts. Hill finished with 14.
In the loss, Scherr led DGAF with 23 points, mostly on fast breaks and lay-ups. Anjelica Ostrea contributed 13 points, and newcomer Adrian Diaz added eight of his own.
The Little Ones 82 - Bangers 74
Jacoby Reed is too big of a force to reckon with in the co-rec league, as he scored from pretty much anywhere he wanted to in the game, leading his team to a 82-74 victory against Bangers.
Reed finished with a season-high 49 points, with relatively even scoring in both halves to pace his team in the win. He scored almost two-thirds of his team's points in the game while hitting ten three pointers on his own.
The game was close all the way down to the wire, tied with 2:30 left, but Reed and the girls on his team helped his team pull away late to preserve the win. The girls all played well at the end, trading baskets before the end. Helping out Reed was Ben Chambliss, whose 12 points gave them another scoring option, though another was hardly needed.
Jabbar Daniels played well for Bangers in the losing effort, scoring 18 points and running the floor. Deanna Mayfield, who has been a scoring threat all season, kept that description alive by scoring 21 points of her own.
Boyd Law 60 - AED 42
Boyd Law had two players that AED could not stop, which hurt them down the stretch as a late comeback was quelled in Boyd Law's 60-42 victory.
Dan Martinez of Boyd Law had another productive game, scoring 19 points to lead his team, but it was Elisabeth Flemming who really hurt AED, as no girl could guard her. She scored 15 points, mostly down low, using her size and strenght to ward off defenders.
With seven minutes left, AED cut the lead to single digits, but Boyd Law went on a let run to extend the lead and preserve the victory. In the win, Kristopher Zeppenfeld added 10 points to support his team.
In the loss, Erick Furlan and Michael Tang both played well, scoring 15 and 9 respectively. But a lack of help from the rest of the roster held them back from the upset.
Robomonster 66 - Phi Delta Theta 45
A close game drifted away from Phi Delta Theta as sloppy play allowed Robomonster to milk the clock in their 66-45 win.
The game was close early, with the score only 30-23 at half-time, but then Phi Delt started to play sloppily. Robomonster, and Justin Desmarais in particular, started playing bigger and using their size to add to their lead.
Jordan Batton of Phi Delt played well, hitting several off-balance shots to keep his team in the game, but Robomonster still ran away with it later on to enforce the two-monite mercy rule.
Batton led Phi Delta Theta with 19 points, but Robomonster had three big scorers. Bryan Burrell led the scorers with 21 points, but Kyle Parsick and Jon Ross Campeau were not far behind, scoring 17 and 16, respectively.
Nupes or Nothing 44 - Kappa Sigma B 39
Nupes or Nothing was trailing at half-time, but that did not stop them from coming back to win in dramatic fashion against Kappa Sigma by a final score of 44-39.
Trailing 26-20, Nupes brought themselves back in the game with a picked-up intensity and capitalizing on opportunities presented to them by K-Sig turnovers. But the score was tied mid-way through the second half, only to see Nups slowly take a small lead that they managed to hold onto until the end.
Kappa Sigma had chances late in the game to tie it with under two minutes left, but several missed shots preserved Nupes' lead.
Marcell Solomon and Bryson Redd led Nupes in the win, scoring 12 and nine points, respectively, while K-Sig's Klorman brothers, Alex and Ryan, each scored 12 points to lead their team.
My Bois 20 - Matzah Ballers 0
Forfeit
Just Do It 65 - Open and Notorious 24
Just Do It was without team leader Matt Euhara, but that did not stop them from dominating Open and Notorious in JDI's 65-24 victory.
The overall team play of JDI shows every time they play, and Open and Notorious felt the wrath of that today. The passing, breakaways, and converting of second-chance opportunities built them an early lead that they never lost, builidng upon it throughout the game.
Open and Notorious struggled mightily offensively, not even getting on the scoreboard until 7:30 had passed in the second half. Only four points were scored in the whole second half over fourteen minutes of play before the 40-point mercy rule was put into effect.
Kyle Davis led JDI with 17 points in the win. Several other players contributed as well, but the team play continues to stand out.
Dan Martinez continued to be the leader for Open and Notorious, throwing down 12 points, ten of which came in the first half.
Team Ford 72 - LDSSA Ballers 64
Team Ford led throughout the whole game, but they had to stop a late comeback by LDSSA before clinching the win in their 72-64 victory.
Team Ford had bigger players, and that proved to be their strategy as they consistently fed their players inside. Ryan Burneo played great as the big man, scoring 24 points, 13 of which came in the first half.
LDSSA caught fire late, bringing a 21 point lead all the way down to six points, but they never got closer than that, despite a solid performance late in the game by their own big men.
Leading all scorers in the game was Team Ford captain Cory Ford, who had 27 points on the night.
In the losing effort, Greg Soderquist had 20 points to lead LDSSA and Jeffrey Bowler and Cameron Hyer added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Deadliest Catch 74 - Kruger's Cut List 68
In a game where the final score was not indicative of how the game was played, Deadliest Catch triumphed over Kruger's Cut List by a score of 74-68.
Deadliest Catch was dominant from the start, beginning the game on a 13-2 run. KCL calmed down after that, cutting the lead down to seven points late in the first half, but another big run by Deadliest Catch extended the lead at half-time to 40-22.
Kruger's Cut List was not close for the rest of the game until too late, when a big run cut the lead to only six points. Unfortunately, at that point, the buzzer rang signaling the end of the game, cutting the run short.
Justin Fuller, Tyler Lewis, Jared Relyea and Nick Salvadore all played well for Deadliest Catch, scoring 13, 14, 15 and 16 points, respectively, amongst them.
In the loss, Trevor Cornia played great as the big man for Kruger's Cut List, scoring 14 second-half points en route to 24 on the night. Curtis Jensen also played well on the wing, scoring 16 points in the game.
Athletics 66 - Team 3D 46
A close game at half-time drifted away from Team 3D's grasp, as Athletics pulled away to win by mercy rule, 66-46.
With the score only 32-29 in favor of Athletics at the mid-way break, Athletics went on a 14-0 run to start the second half, extending the lead to 50-31 with 13:30 left in the game. Athletics really showed their speed and athleticism in the second half, breaking away with nice play after nice play.
Team 3D had opportunities in the second half, but missed fast break lay-ups and wasted chances with offensive rebounds proved to haunt them later on in the game.
Spencer Schofield paced Athletics in the first half, scoring 12 points (all from 3's) in the half on his way to 15 on the night (also all 3's). Markus Ebrecht took over in the second half, scoring 11 points for a total of 17 on the night.
In the loss, Matthew Alleman played well for Team 3D, scoring nine of his team's first 12 points and even hitting a three at the buzzer to cut the lead to three points. He finished with 19 points.
AK Holics 75 - Alpha Team 53
Alpha Team was overmatched, but they still played hard all the way down to the end in their 75-53 loss to AK Holics.
AK Holics unique combination of size and speed is a match-up problem for anyone, but Alpha Team played them hard, only trailing by 13 at half-time (41-28). However, they were unable to put together any form of offensive run to decrease the deficit, and AK Holics coasted to the finish.
The winning team had double digit points by five different players: Casey Flair (10), Wesley Archer (11), Cody Hill (13) Nick Johnson (13), and Steven Huskey (19). On nights like these when everyone is scoring, AK Holics are hard to stop, as Alpha Team learned.
However, they did play well, as mentioned. Jason Vanmeetren led his team with 21 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Also, David Langhaim scored 14 points. Chris Connell also played well with 12 points, but all of the points came in the first half.
Fury 80 - The Rain 50
Fury exploded offensively in the second half to mercy rule The Rain at the five minute point for a 80-50 win.
With Fury leading 78-50 and the clock approaching five minutes, Neal Ekpoudia hit two free throws to enforce the rule. This was after his team went on a second-half tear to quell any chance of The Rain making a comeback.
Fury used the speed of D'angelo Saulsberry and Demarcus Bourne and the size of Ekpoudia to out-play The Rain on all levels. Shortly after half-time the score was 61-48, and a manageable game for The Rain, but a 13-0 run followed by another big run later ended The Rain's chances of making it back into the game.
Rashad Burton and Ehbert Talice of The Rain led all in-game scorers with 18 points apiece, but the Fury players spread the ball well to their whole team, while the duo from The Rain did most of the work for their team.
In the win, Bourne scored 16 points, 14 in the first half, and Saulsberry and Ekpoudia each added nine points. Shadaevon Florial also had a good game, scoring 12 points for Fury.
Amilli 44 - The Bullets 33
Amilli's offense is not dominating teams in their quest to become repeat champions, but their defense is stifling every team that gets in their way, as tough defense led to Amilli ending up with a 44-33 win.
The Bullets were leading late in the first half, but a late 8-0 run by Amilli gave them a 23-22 half-time lead. But The Bullets began turning the ball over and Amilli was able to capitalize on some of the possessions.
The score was still close late in the game too, but a dagger of a three-pointer by Joaquin Harvey put Amilli up 37-30 with little chance of a comeback.
Jody Daramola led Amilli with ten points, and teammate Jason Pettaway was right behind him with nine points, four of which came off of two impressive dunks as time was expiring.
In the loss, Jordan Preston had eight hard-earned points, and Terrance McMillan added ten of his own.
Johnnie Hopkins 76 - Ante Up 63
Johnnie Hopkins built an early lead and they did not let up in the second half as they held on to beat Ante Up by a final score of 76-63.
Most of the scoring for Johnnie Hopkins came from only three players, but those three averaged almost 21 points each in the win. Dack Ishii and Corey Hales were effective down-low and from beyond the arc, and Adrian Diaz played well at the point, scoring from all over the floor.
Ante Up came back from an early deficit to be down by only eight points with 14 minutes left, but they lost a lot of momentum when several missed shots and turnovers led to an increased lead for Johnnie Hopkins.
Hales led the team with 23 points, and Ishii and Diaz added 20 and 19, respectively, in the win.
In the loss, Alex Muldrow and Kenna Uzowihe both played well. Muldrow finished with 17, and Uzowihe had 16 points.
